Music is a Medicine for the Soul

At Mercy Hospital, healing the body is only part of our mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, healing the soul through hospitality and compassion is equally important. Since every individual varies in what heals the heart, Mercy Hospital offers several modalities including chaplaincy, art for healing, social services and pet therapy. Another unique program we are honored to offer is Acoustic Remedies, which uses the power of music to bring comfort and restoration to patients and their families.

The Acoustic Remedies program at Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield includes skilled musicians who play a variety of instruments. They travel from patient room to patient room using their skill in a healing context to reduce stress, manage pain, lift emotions, and increase emotional intimacy among family and visitors, and sometimes it’s simply meaningful time spent having fun.

Every week, the musicians share stories such as walking into a patients room who has uncontrolled pain, and leaving when the patient is resting comfortably. It’s not uncommon that a patient nearing end of life benefits from a favorite worship song to bring the patient and family peace.

The Acoustic Remedies program has been funded entirely by the generosity of Mercy Hospital employees, through The 2018 Spirit of Giving Campaign. We now humbly ask that you consider joining Mercy Hospital employees and make a gift to support the Acoustic Remedies program this Easter. Your gift will ensure that patients, families and staff can continue to benefit from the beautiful service that is clearly aligned with the Sisters of Mercy and Our Lord’s desire to heal the spirit.

Click here to make a gift to this year’s Easter Appeal in support of Mercy’s Acoustic Remedies Program. Include the names of those you would like prayed for, no matter the age. The names of your loved ones will be forwarded to the Sisters of Mercy, who will pray for them and you during this Easter season.

Mercy is dedicated to furthering the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by caring for and supporting all who visit our hospitals. May your Easter season be filled with gratitude for all of the wonders of our world.
