William Howell Century Club
The William Howell Century Club is a men's philanthropic club started in honor of Mercy's 100th anniversary and William Howell, Sr., one of Mercy's first benefactors. Mr. Howell was instrumental with bringing the Sisters of Mercy to Bakersfield and establishing Mercy Hospital in 1910.
The club, now in their second year has increased its membership to 84. On February 6, fifty members gathered for the second meeting of the year at Mercy Hospital Truxtun. The evening began with a cocktail reception adjacent to the Healing Garden and included demonstrations of high-tech equipment used in spinal surgery and wellness screenings. Following dinner the men voted to use their cumulative gift of $85,000 to fund diagnostic imaging equipment for patients suffering from disorders such as scoliosis and a mini C-arm (X-ray imaging equipment) for our Emergency Room at Mercy Southwest to be used specifically for the timely diagnosis of orthopedic and extremity cases.
Since this is a philanthropic club, members are asked to contribute $1,000 each year. 100% of this membership gift goes directly to the project chosen to be funded.
